Discussion Topic

As noted in #1 we are building a standard registry of MCP servers. The purpose of this is a placeholder for where we'll be able to discuss the design of a package.json-like metadata structure to represent information about Model Context Protocol servers. It will be the way we represent servers in the registry.

Goals

• ​​Scope the kind of metadata server creators are responsible for managing for distribution
• Provide enough metadata about the server for the API to search and filter to find servers of interest
• Provide enough metadata to empower a client to run the source code of a server
• Provide reference(s) to a hosted endpoint of the server for SSE connections

Open Questions

• Do we want mcp.json to be a file people store in their project, or only a schema that clients of the API need to submit

Not posting earlier attempts at designing a schema. We can all discuss details after the public API comes together in #1

@alexhancock I think it will make sense to open a PR for specific proposal for an mcp.json metadata format after we land #3. Closing for now but lmk if you want to do it differently.
