Concept Research & Brainstorm

This page will partly be in Dutch because my client is a newspaper from The Netherlands. I will have my final assessment in Dutch and therefore I need to have Dutch research questions.

On this page my process of concept is visible. I first made my first concept, then I presented my concept throughout a pitch for the Volkskrant and after that I've made my second and last version of my concept.

"Cars in the city"

At the beginning of the project we've got a talk form Joris Tieleman en Xander van Uffelen. They both work at the Volkskrant and explained the concept of the project to us. "Cars in the city" is the subject we're going to focus on the coming weeks. With different kinds of data we are going to make a visualisation with interesting relations between several variables.

Together my support-group I've made two mindmaps about all the things we thought about the subject. In the first one we've written all the things around the head subject.

The first one is a global scope to generate some different perspectives about the theme: De auto in de stad - mindmap algemeen

With the second mindmap we visualize the stakeholders: De auto in de stad - mindmap stakeholders

To come up with a good research question, I want to generate as much as possible subbquestions:

  • What is the impact of the oldtimers on the environment?
  • Is OV the solution to the car problem?
  • Are electric cars really better? After how long are they better?
  • Effect from "milieuzone" in different cities?
  • Is there a possibility to park free for the whole day when visiting a city?
  • Searching the cheapest route to a city from the same location (including PT)

Concept V1.0

I've wrote some different kinds of themes in my notebook also, and I come up with two subjects I want to investigate. These two are:

  • Parking tickets
  • Busy roads during covid

The first one I like the most. So let's see if I can find some data about parking tickets. The things I want to visualize are:

  • Increasement of average ticket prises
  • In which region are the most fines issued
  • In which region are the most expensive fines issued

I was looking for data in the RDW-dataset first.

Some recent articles I've founded the subject:

Parking tickets:

I did not find something useful, so I was searching in CBS and another resource I've fount was on the Nationaal Dataportaal Wegverkeer.

Finally I asked the "data-inzicht" channel if anyone have seen some data on this subject, but Laurens reacted that it is maybe a subject that is too private. Because I didn't find any data, I also think it's not public data and I can not work with it. Now I'm going to do some research about the 2nd subject.

Some resources I found when looking for data: Many sites refer towards the Nationaal Dataportaal Wegverkeer but I can't find very good data myself.

Usefull resources:

  • An amazing visualisation of live-data is wegbeeld. It's very easy to see where it is busy or not on the road.
  • Busy roads in Noord-Brabant. They also get their data from NDW.

I'm going to look for interesting variables in the given RDW-dataset to find some relations between them. Maybe I will come up with a concept faster.

Random data inzichten:

  • 7974 parkeergelegenheden totaal in de dataset (dynamische)
  • Het meest voorkomende probleem van een auto tijdens een keuring door de RDW is een kofferbak die niet goed open en dicht kan.

Pitch Volkskrant

How does the amount of cars effect the capacity and amount of the parking garages in The Netherlands.

The day of the pitch, I decided to make a digital sketch of my ideas of my concept. I've put them in a short presentation which you can follow here.

I began with referring to 'destadgroeit.nl' where you can see the upcoming buildings that are build in Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands. I was very inspired by this visualisation because it is so clear to see what is happening while the time moves foreword. It inspired me to make a

Then I presented my research question and told my vision behind this question.

Concept V2.0

I've decided to make a new concept because the data did not match my expectations. I would like to make a visualisation of the difference between a few So I've decided to come up with a new concept and a new research question. My new subject is about the
