Please check if the environment variable MQTT_PUBLISH_OPTIONS fulfils your needs. Its content is appended to the mosquitto_pub call.

Example:
MQTT_PUBLISH_OPTIONS='-u username -P password -i client_id'

I just tried a small example with authentication, and it worked.

Maybe a quoting issue? Could you try:

• MQTT_PUBLISH_OPTIONS="-u myuser -P !Veryhardpassword! -i tvheadend-mqtt"
• MQTT_PUBLISH_OPTIONS="-u myuser -P '!Veryhardpassword!' -i tvheadend-mqtt"

Another option (just to find out the issue) is to check if a simple password works.

Another idea: try to declare the environment variables as dictionary, not as list. The following example works for me:

    environment:
      TVHEADEND_USER: "tvh-user"
      TVHEADEND_PASSWORD: "tvh-password"
      TVHEADEND_HOST: "tvheadend-host"
      TVHEADEND_HTTP_PORT: "9981"
      MQTT_BROKER_HOSTNAME: "broker-host"

From docker-compose - how to escape environment variables:

Environment variables (including their name), have to be fully wrapped inside single or double quotes: "" or ''

Examples:

environment:

environment:
  - 'PORT=3000'

I got the same error when i tried I dont have possible to test with easy password, i dont userstand who i should try with the quotes like about :

    MQTT_PUBLISH_OPTIONS: "-u myuser -P !v3ryh4rdp4ssw0rd? -i tvheadend-mqtt"

(with quotes and uppercase P)

If it still doesn't work: are you able to call mosquitto_pub from the command line of the host where tvheadend-mqtt is running?

$ mosquitto_pub -h 192.168.1.2 -t tvheadend/test -m test -u myuser -P !v3ryh4rdp4ssw0rd? -i tvheadend-mqtt
