hide / hide others stopped working

Hide Application used to hide the current application, while Hide Others (e.g. in GWorkspace) used to keep current app and hide others in background.
Currently it doesn't work - even using classic windowmaker - and I remember it working!

Hide seems just to flickr the current application menu, not its windows... it may even hide and redisplay itself.
Hide Others doesn't appear to do anything useful anymore.
